Paducah
Overview
Welcome to Baptist Health Paducah’s PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency website! The goal of our residency program is to provide multiple educational opportunities in a wide variety of practice settings. We strive to provide you with a well-rounded PGY-1 experience to prepare you for board certification, a PGY-2 residency or to begin a career as an inpatient hospital pharmacist.
Baptist Health Paducah’s Residency Program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
Baptist Health Paducah is a regional medical and referral center. The 373-bed hospital provides high-level care to the residents of the Jackson Purchase area. The hospital offers a full continuum of care, including advanced cardiac and cancer care; diagnostic imaging; women’s and children’s services, including the region’s only level 3 NICU; surgery; emergency treatment 24/7; neurology coverage; rehabilitation; weight management; and wound care. The pharmacy’s mission is to provide safe and effective pharmaceutical care to the patients of Baptist Health Paducah.
Baptist Health Paducah’s PGY-1 residency program is unique by being able to provide a large variety of experiences in a community hospital. Pharmacists are involved in antimicrobial and opioid stewardship efforts, along with medication safety initiatives.
Baptist Health Paducah received ASHP Accreditation for their PGY-1 Residency Program in 2023.

During our learning experiences, residents will have the opportunity to be a part of a multidisciplinary team. During their clinical learning experiences, they will be located on the floors along with the providers, nursing staff, dieticians, and therapy staff. In our Critical Care learning experience, residents will participate in multidisciplinary rounds with our Intensivists.
The resident will be required to staff two evening shifts and one weekend a month.
One of the longitudinal learning experiences in our curriculum is research. Residents will choose a topic to perform a research project, with intentions of improving patient outcomes and quality. The research project will be presented at a Regional Residency Conference in the Spring of their residency year. A manuscript will be completed, in addition to the formal presentation.
The program is affiliated with the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and offers opportunities to pharmacy residents and preceptors. Our residents are enrolled in the Teaching Certificate for Pharmacists program as offered by ASHP.
The program is designed to introduce contemporary pharmacy/health professions education issues, teaching styles, and philosophies, and prepare residents for future roles as clinician‐educators by increasing their knowledge of these issues and providing them a venue to gain teaching experience. The Teaching Certificate Program prepares a foundation for teaching in both classroom and experiential settings.
In addition to the Teaching Certificate, the resident will be able to take on roles as a preceptor through interactions with APPE students. Also, the resident will be responsible for developing a CE-accredited presentation to give at a Grand Rounds throughout the entire Baptist Health System.
Elective learning experiences are four weeks in length. Residents will have the opportunity to choose from three of the following:
- Informatics
- Perioperative Services
- Cardiology
- Transitions of Care
Our residents participate in a resident mentorship program. At the end of their orientation period, they pick a preceptor to be their mentor. The purpose of this mentorship is to provide another individual that the resident can seek guidance and feedback from, in addition to the residency program director.
