Paducah pharmacy residency program

Overview

Mission

Baptist Health Paducah’s Residency Program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Program Highlights

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Baptist Health Paducah is designed to expand on the education provided by a PharmD curriculum and prepare its graduates for positions in clinical pharmacy practice or continuance to a specialty residency training. The PGY1 residency program is designed to enable the resident to engage in progressive pharmacy services in a variety of clinical settings for an acute care regional hospital. The resident is exposed to clinical and professional elements important to current practices of pharmacy. In addition to rotations and longitudinal activities, responsibilities include participation in committee meetings and initiatives, precepting students, presenting classroom lectures and conducting valuable research to improve pharmacy services. Resident experiences are customized and adapted throughout the year to allow them to meet their individual goals. Residency preceptors challenge the resident to excel in a supportive community environment and prepare them to be future leaders in the pharmacy profession.

Curriculum

The program is designed to give the resident a breadth of experiences including direct patient care, project management, distributive operations and drug information/literature evaluation. By the conclusion of the residency year, the trainee will have acquired the confidence to be an independent practitioner in the many facets of general pharmacy practice.

Required Learning Experiences

The PGY-1 program is designed to provide direct patient care experiences typical of a community-based hospital setting. Required learning experiences are selected in a sequence to provide the resident an opportunity to not only pursue their interests but also to be a competitive candidate for a specialized PGY-2 if desired. With the exception of orientation, which is four weeks in length, all required learning experiences are six weeks in length.

Longitudinal Learning Experiences

Staffing: Upon completion of training, the resident will serve as a pharmacist with other staff in the areas of order entry verification and sterile compounding. Through these activities, residents will gain experience as a staff pharmacist, learning to lead teams of peers and technicians through daily pharmacy tasks.

Evaluation: The evaluation process will be in compliance with ASHP accreditation standards. PharmAcademic™ evaluation system will be used for written summative evaluations at the end of all month-long rotations and quarterly for longitudinal activities. In addition to formal assessment regarding progress towards residency objectives, preceptors also utilize verbal and written formative evaluations during rotations, presentations and on written activities to encourage resident development.

Graduation and Certification: Upon successful completion of the residency program, the resident will receive a certificate verifying completion of the program in accordance with ASHP Regulations on Accreditation of Pharmacy Residencies.

Research Opportunity

The resident must select a research project to be completed throughout the residency year. This project should then be presented in poster format at a pharmacy conference with an accompanying manuscript. The residency research project provides the resident with the opportunity to develop, implement, and assess a pharmacy-related topic with the goal of publishing the results in a peer-reviewed journal or implementation of a new pharmacy service.
