Baptist Health Hardin PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program Overview
The Baptist Health Hardin PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is an ASHP-accredited program in collaboration with the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy (UKCOP). This partnership provides residents with valuable opportunities, including Voluntary Faculty Instructor appointments, teaching roles at the College, access to extensive library resources, and dedicated research support from a biostatistician. Our program emphasizes work-life balance and personalized experiences tailored to help each resident achieve their unique professional goals.
Schedule and Staffing Expectations
Residents will work a maximum of five ten-hour shifts per week, exclusive of time dedicated to topic preparation, projects, or meetings outside of regular hours. Staffing responsibilities will be limited to no more than every third weekend as part of the Pharmacy Practice Longitudinal learning experience. Residents will receive compensatory days off for weekend work and will benefit from a structured 10-hour day that often allows for built-in project time aligned with the RPD's office hours for convenient support. Additionally, dedicated administrative days (“A” days) will focus on longitudinal learning and project development. Residents will be expected to work one minor and one major holiday but will not participate in the on-call schedule.

Meet Our Residents
"Baptist Health Hardin has always been the place for me. I never considered pursuing a residency until I met the pharmacy team here during my fourth-year rotations. I started with two rotations at Hardin because my family lives in Elizabethtown, but after seeing all that BHH has to offer, I couldn’t resist adding a third rotation. That’s when I discovered my passion for emergency medicine, learning from the best preceptors in one of the busiest emergency departments in the state.
Throughout my residency, I have been blessed to be able to work alongside some of the kindest and smartest people I have ever met. One of those individuals is Dr. Rachel Priddy Ramsey, the residency program director. Her dedication to her learners is unparalleled. She shares her wealth of knowledge from her own two years of residency and will stop at nothing to make sure her residents have everything they need to succeed.
I was also drawn to Hardin because of the diverse range of rotations available. The variety of experiences truly prepares you for different practice environments, which I think is invaluable. Another reason Hardin ranked as my top choice is the leadership team. They’ve built a culture of inclusiveness that makes the whole department feel like family. Everyone goes out of their way to support one another, and they’ve made impressive strides in advancing pharmacy practice with even more growth on the horizon.
It has been an honor to be the first resident at Hardin and to embark on the accreditation journey of this residency program. I genuinely wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of Hardin and all the amazing pharmacists who work here."

Residents are strongly encouraged to complete all licensure exams before the start of the residency year to optimize training during orientation. It is also recommended that residents participate in a law review class prior to taking the Kentucky Pharmacy Law Exam. If licensure exams are scheduled during the residency year, residents may utilize allotted “professional leave” days for this purpose, keeping in mind that these days are limited and must be used in accordance with the Resident Leave and Time Off Policy.
All professional meetings required by the program will be considered regular professional time, pending approval from the Residency Program Director (RPD). Travel for these meetings is subject to system approval, and professional leave for meetings may be adjusted if system restrictions necessitate changes in program requirements. The following professional leave days are permitted without affecting your time off:
- Licensure Exams or Interviews: 3 days
- Kentucky Pharmacy Residency Network (KPRN) Meeting: 1 day
- KSHP Fall Meeting: 2 days
- ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting (ASHP MCM): 4 days
- Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference (GLPRC): 3 days
- Teaching and Learning Experience: 2 days
Any requests for professional leave or activities outside of fulfilling program requirements will require approval from the RPD and may necessitate the use of personal time off.
Baptist Health Hardin is committed to prioritizing both resident wellness and success in its residency program design. We intentionally integrate wellness into the program through several thoughtful initiatives.
Program Structure
Residents are never scheduled for more than five 10-hour days in a pay period, ensuring they receive a compensatory days off when working weekends. The 10-hour day structure frequently allows for built-in project time, typically aligned with the RPD's office hours for easy access to support and guidance. Additionally, residents benefit from regular administrative days (“A” days) dedicated to longitudinal learning and project development. A pre-scheduled week off in December provides a much-needed opportunity to reset and recharge before the busy activities and deadlines of the third quarter.
The program emphasizes working smarter, not harder, by strategically aligning program requirements with similar content areas. For instance, a required Medication Use Evaluation (MUE) can be conducted while precepting a student who assists with data collection, simultaneously fulfilling requirements for medication safety and teaching and learning longitudinal rotations. This same MUE may also serve as the gap analysis for your grand rounds presentation, which is another teaching and learning rotation requirement. A required patient case presentation during one of your required rotations will lay the foundation for your system grand rounds CPE presentation.
Fostering Connection
We are dedicated to fostering personal connections with our residents, ensuring that their well-being and success remain at the forefront. We recognize that residency can be a challenging year, and we are here to support you every step of the way. The RPD and Pharmacy Residency Leadership hold regular meetings with residents to build these connections and monitor for signs of burnout. If any signs or symptoms arise, we will work together to develop a tailored action plan to ensure you receive the support you need.
