Breast Augmentation
What to Expect: Breast Augmentation (Breast Implant Surgery)
Breast Augmentation Candidate
- You’re physically healthy, not pregnant or breastfeeding
- You don’t smoke
- You have realistic expectations
- You are bothered by having small breasts
- You’re unhappy with your breasts losing their shape, volume, or weight loss with aging
- One or both of your breasts have failed to develop normally
The Consultation
During your breast augmentation consultation, be prepared to discuss:
- Why you want the surgery, your expectations, and desired outcomes
- Medical conditions, drug allergies, and medical treatments
- Use of current medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco, and drug use
- Previous surgeries
- Family history of breast cancer and results of mammograms and or biopsies
- Photos, detailed measurements, size and shape of implants, and skin quality
- Breast augmentation does not correct drooping breasts. You may require a breast lift (mastopexy) along with a breast augmentation for breasts to look fuller and lifted.
- There are two approved types of breast implants (saline and silicone). These options allow your surgeon to use the best type of implant to achieve the look you desire. You must be 22 years of age to have silicone implants. Your doctor will discuss pros and cons of saline versus silicone.
The Benefits
- Breast Augmentation can change the size and proportion of the breasts
- Breast implants enhance breast volume
- Augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis
The Recovery
- Following breast augmentation surgery, your breasts may remain swollen and sensitive to physical contact.
- You will be placed in a postoperative bra after your augmentation surgery for support and to reduce swelling.
- You may feel tightness of the breast area as your skin adjusts to your new breast size.
- Your breasts and nipples may have less feeling immediately after surgery and during swelling.
- Your implants will settle and soften over a period of several months.
- Continue follow up care with your Plastic Surgeon.
Tips For Healing
- Following breast augmentation surgery, you will be given medications to be taken orally to aid in your healing and reduce the risk of infection or swelling.
- It’s important to avoid any strenuous activities for at least 2 weeks that would require use of your arms and chest.
- No underwire bra for 6 weeks.
- Follow up with your Plastic Surgeon for specific instructions on how to care for yourself.
