Kristine Baula, MD:

The Behavioral Health unit here at Baptist Health La Grange is a new inpatient unit that provides compassionate and individualized care for adults 18 and up. We treat a variety of different mental health issues that can include mood disorders like depression and bipolar disorder, severe anxiety disorders, trauma-related disorders, and psychotic disorders.

Many of the patients who struggle with severe mental health issues are unable or unwilling to seek treatment. Rural communities like our own often have a stronger stigma associated with seeking mental healthcare, and so expanding behavioral health services here at Baptist Health La Grange can help normalize mental health treatment and reduce the stigma, while also keeping treatment local.

Our interdisciplinary team consists of a variety of healthcare professionals, as well as support staff to help provide services for our patients. We have a variety of different therapists, offering a wide variety of therapeutic activities on the unit, including individual, group and family therapy and recreational therapy. As an acute inpatient unit, our goal is to rapidly stabilize mental health crises and enable patients to return to a functional lifestyle off the unit as quickly as possible.

Many patients end up coming to us feeling hopeless and helpless. To be part of the reason that they can regain hope and the feeling of, "I can do this," is an absolute privilege.
