Baptist Health Paducah would like to welcome you to the introduction to chemotherapy video. We are here to provide the best possible care for you during your cancer journey. When you arrive at the cancer center, you'll need to check in with the receptionist at the front desk in the main lobby. The receptionist will provide instruction to you about your appointments for the day.

Most patients are scheduled in the lab prior to their appointment with the doctor or nurse before each treatment. Your appointments will be coordinated and scheduled by your physician. The registration team is notified of your arrival once you have checked in. During the registration process, the registrar will obtain important information from you and your insurance information will be collected.

In the lab, your blood will be drawn and the required laboratory test ordered by your physician will be performed. These lab results look at important lab values that can be altered by your treatment. You can expect to have your blood drawn weekly while you're on chemotherapy. Occasionally, more frequent blood testing is required to monitor your blood counts while you are undergoing treatment.

You can expect to have your lab drawn prior to or within 24 hours of your chemotherapy treatment. After your lab appointment, you will check in to see your oncologist or go directly to the infusion center. Depending on your diagnosis and the frequency of your treatment, you may be required to see your doctor before your treatment. Your physician will complete an assessment to determine if you are tolerating your prescribed therapy before each treatment.

Lab results will also be reviewed and discussed with you. It is important that you inform your provider of any changes or issues you may be having during this time. After your lab and physician appointment, you will be instructed to return to the front desk and check in for your treatment. A staff member from the infusion team will greet you in the lobby and assist you into the infusion area.

Your height, weight, and vital signs will be obtained at every visit. In order for your medication dose to be calculated, an accurate height and weight is needed at every visit. You will be seated into one of our infusion bays and a staff member will offer you a heated blanket and a pillow. A light lunch or snack will also be provided to you during your treatment.

The nurse will review your medical history, home medication list, and complete an assessment prior to your treatment. Your vital signs, height, weight, lab results, and treatment plan will also be reviewed by your nurse. After these steps are completed, the pharmacy team in the cancer center will be notified to prepare your medication. The cancer center staff completes several steps to ensure patient safety.

Trained oncology pharmacy staff and nurses perform several safety checks prior to and after the medications are prepared. The medication prep time can take up to an hour. On average, medications are ready for administration in about 30 minutes. Your treatment plan is very individualized.

Chemotherapy is usually administered to patients through their veins, but it can also be given through an injection or in a pill form. A port is a safe, effective device that is sometimes needed for oncology treatments. If a port is needed, your physician will discuss this with you. We ask that you wear comfortable clothing the day of your treatment.

If you have a port, we ask you to wear a button down shirt or a shirt with a large or loose neck so your nurse can easily clean and access the port site. While you are waiting for your medication to be prepared, your nurse will review any potential side effects. There are effective medications your physician can prescribe to ease any side effects that you may experience. Although these side effects are possible, not all patients will experience them.

Most chemotherapy drugs can weaken your immune system and increase your risk for infection. Hand washing is key to prevent infection. You should check your temperature once a day. It is very important that you notify your physician if you develop a temperature.

The Ray and Kay Eckstein Regional Cancer Care Center offers oncology treatments to our community and surrounding areas. Treatments may be given once a day, weekly, or every two to three weeks. Some of the treatments provided in our cancer center include chemotherapy, biotherapy, immunotherapy, and hormone therapy. Supportive therapies, blood products, and many other non-oncology treatments can also be provided in our center.

The cancer center is staffed with oncology certified nurses that follow the Oncology Nursing Society's administration guidelines for safe practice. The cancer center offers 25 private heated infusion chairs with a personal television in each bay. Free Wi-Fi internet service is available. There are large windows in the infusion center with natural lighting and views of healing gardens to promote a calm and healing atmosphere within the center.

Private infusion bays allow for one family member or a friend to stay with you during your treatment. The infusion center was designed with the patient's needs and comfort in mind. For the safety of our patients, we ask that your family member or friend is 16 years of age or older in order to enter the infusion area. If at any time during your treatment you need to speak with our oncology social worker, please let your infusion nurse know.

Feel free to visit our resource room located off the main lobby of the cancer center. Cancer information and books are available at no cost to our patients. Support group information, local resource information, wigs, and head coverings are also available. Dietitian and nutrition counseling is available by appointment.

We hope this introductory video has answered some of your questions. Please feel free to ask a staff member for any help you may need or to answer any questions you may have. Chemotherapy can be used before surgery to shrink a tumor, after surgery to kill remaining cancer cells and to help reduce symptoms. Chemotherapy may be delivered by mouth as a pill or liquid, by IV infusion in a vein, as a cream applied on the surface of the skin, or as an injection.

Hormonal Therapy: Hormones travel throughout the body, regulating the activity or behavior of cells or organs. Hormonal therapy uses certain drugs to block, remove or alter the activity of hormones in order to slow or stop cancer cell growth. Hormonal therapy can be delivered by mouth as a pill, as an injection or as a surgical procedure to remove organs that produce hormones.

Immunotherapy: Concentrated amounts of the body’s natural substances can sometimes help the immune system to fight certain cancers. Immunotherapy helps the body attack or combat cancer cells. It uses substances made by the body in a laboratory, which are injected or administered as an IV infusion.
