Meeting the Highest Standards for Patient Treatment

Baptist Health Medical Group Hematology & Oncology is one of only three oncology practices in Kentucky to earn Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) re-certification.

The national certification is for meeting or exceeding high standards of patient treatment and safety. Fewer than 15 percent of oncology practices in the United States have gained the three-year certification. QOPI is a program of The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), a national professional organization for medical oncology.

QOPI certification means that patients can be assured that they are receiving the highest level of cancer care—even as that level rises.

Achieving certification was the goal of Daniel Scullin, MD, now retired from the practice. Dr. Scullin championed the certification process believing that QOPI certification equates with best practice in the care of hematology and oncology patients. He believes certification validates the knowledge and skill of CBC physicians and nurses as well as the practice systems they utilize. To become QOPI certified, an oncology practice must demonstrate excellence in:

• Treatment planning
• Staff training and education
• Chemotherapy orders and drug preparation
• Patient consent and education
• Safe chemotherapy administration
• Monitoring and assessment of patient well-being

The certification process consists of an extensive chart extraction and review of patient records, plus a site visit. The data is submitted to the QOPI national committee for review and to ensure all core standards are met.

The CBC Group, founded in 1947, has 13 physicians, and five advanced practice nurses. The practice has some 20,000 active patients, seeing about 1,200-1,500 patients a week.

The full-service office has an accredited lab, pharmacy, X-ray, and an infusion center for chemotherapy administration. A social worker is on staff to help counsel patients and guide them to community resources.

The CBC Group participates in many community-based clinical trials, and works closely with Baptist Health Louisville research nurses to facilitate patient participation in both National Cancer Institute and industry-based trials.
