Diabetes can affect every major system in your body so it is important to understand the different types of diabetes and the signs and symptoms associated with each.

The most common diabetes diagnoses include:

  • Pre-Diabetes: A diagnosis of pre-diabetes puts you at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. Treatment and lifestyle changes have been proven to prevent or delay Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Type 1 Diabetes: Is an autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to attack the specialized cells (beta cells) in the pancreas that make insulin. Insulin is a hormone that allows sugar to enter the cells of the body to be used for energy. A person with Type 1 Diabetes must take insulin for energy. While many times, Type 1 Diabetes in found in childhood, it can also happen in adults. Type 1 diabetes can run in families. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have a family history of Type 1 Diabetes.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: Happens when the body does not make enough insulin, and the insulin is not used by the body for energy. Type 2 diabetes develops over time. If you have a family history of diabetes, are over the age of 45, are overweight or have an inactive lifestyle, talk to your healthcare provider to be screened for Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Gestational Diabetes: Happens during pregnancy. Gestational Diabetes often goes away once the baby is delivered. Having Gestational Diabetes is a risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes. It is important to follow-up with your healthcare provider on a regular basis to make sure your blood sugar levels stay in good range.
