Getting to the Heart of Cardiac Problems Fast
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S. Major problems can emerge quickly. Unfortunately, symptoms indicating a heart condition can be hard to read, and are sometimes confused with other, less serious medical conditions. The emergency medical teams at Baptist Health work to properly diagnose a heart condition and direct you to appropriate levels of care.
What Are the Symptoms of a Heart Attack?
- Tightness, pressure, squeezing, stabbing, or dull pain, most often in the center of the chest
- Pain that spreads to the shoulders, neck, or arms
- Irregular or rapid heartbeat
- Cold sweat or clammy skin
- Lightheadedness, weakness, or dizziness
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea, indigestion, and sometimes vomiting
Any of these symptoms are reason enough to call 911 immediately.
What Happens When I Get to the Emergency Department?
Patients may arrive at the emergency room by car or by ambulance. Upon arriving at the emergency room, tell the person who checks you in that are experiencing chest pain and may be having a heart attack. You will likely undergo an EKG – an electrocardiogram. EKGs can detect whether there is an issue with blood flow to your heart. Once the EKG has been administered, you’ll be seen by a clinician.
The clinician will ask you several questions about your condition and medical background, including family history, your health record, and what medications you’re taking. He or she may order additional tests, including blood work and imaging, in order to make a diagnosis. Depending on the results, you may be admitted to the hospital for observation or a procedure or, in less serious cases, provided with an alternative form of treatment.
