A uterine fibroid is most commonly a benign tumor of the wall of the uterus, the muscular portion of the uterus. The problems that they cause are infertility, heavy periods, painful periods, and chronic pelvic pain.
Megan Croft, Paducah, Kentucky:
It was going on for about two years. I had extreme fatigue, so it made me feel really bad, and I just knew it was time to have the surgery.
Dr. Tolar:
She was a good candidate because she did not desire future fertility, so a hysterectomy is oftentimes the best option for someone like her. Da Vinci surgery is really just a version of laparoscopic surgery. It’s done through small incisions. We do a lot of surgeries that way, whether it’s tying a lady’s tubes or taking a gallbladder out. The addition of the da Vinci robot allows us to perform more complicated surgeries like Megan’s, but yet still give a minimally invasive option. Regular laparoscopy where we stand at the patient’s bedside and use the instruments will have some limitations, and the robot exceeds those, from a visualization standpoint and also a dexterity standpoint with the instruments.
Croft:
I’m really glad that I was able to do it here in Paducah, and I didn’t have to go out of town to have it done. It would be harder for me to go somewhere, a bigger town or bigger hospital, to have that done.
Dr. Tolar:
We are uniquely situated geographically. We don’t have a major metropolitan city 30 minutes away. We can do a lot of things here. Whenever you’re closer to home, you recover quicker, you’re much better off. That’s a win, win for everybody.
