- [Chris] I was running to band class like usual,
and then all of a sudden,

I looked down on my right arm and I couldn't recognize
that it was my arm.

I thought, "Whose arm is that?"

And then, the students started asking me what was
wrong, and then I couldn't answer them.

So I was paralyzed on my whole
right side and I couldn't talk.

- [Dr. Braun] Someone that experiences symptoms
of a stroke, they should call 911 right away.

EMS will arrive and assess the situation.

If it looks like it's a stroke,
they'll take the patient to a certified stroke center.

And it's very important that it's a certified stroke
center because at a certified stroke center,

there's a team already waiting and ready.

And time is of the essence.

The sooner you get tPA if you need it,
the better it goes.

tPA stands for Tissue Plasminogen Activator.

A plasminogen, when it gets activated, will turn into
plasmin, which starts dissolving clots.

And that's how it opens up the areas of clots that have
caused the stroke, opens up the blood vessels so that

blood flow can be resumed.

It's exhilarating when we can give tPA,
and right before our eyes, often,

they get better and it's just
an amazing thing to watch.

- The students here were amazing.

I mean, they were on alert as soon as I couldn't talk,
and that's when one of the students called 911.

I think they're all heroes.

I don't think I would be here
today if it wasn't for them either.

If someone experiences symptoms of a stroke, they should call 911 right away. EMS will arrive and assess the situation. If it looks like it’s a stroke, they’ll take the patient to a certified stroke center. It’s very important that it’s a certified stroke center.
