Check Your Heart Health
In the month of February, we celebrate Valentine’s Day by giving cards, confectionary and carnations to that special someone in our lives. What if this year in addition to doing nice things for others we did something for ourselves by taking an honest look at our own heart health? The following statistics may cause us to re-evaluate our choices and take action to help prevent this leading cause of death in America:
- About 630,000 Americans die from heart disease each year—that’s 1 in every 4 deaths.¹
- Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing about 366,000 people in 2015.¹
- Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. More than half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2015 were in men.[1]
Check Your Heart Health
If you are interested in finding out more about your heart health here is something that can do starting today: Baptist Health offers free Heart and Stroke Screening and you can schedule your appointment at 1-800-4SOURCE. You can also take a free Heart Health Risk Assessment.
In addition, Baptist Health offers inpatient, outpatient and home-based care for individuals with heart disease. Baptist Health Home Care offers a Congestive Heart Failure Program for their patients, focusing on education and compliance. The program is designed for patients with a new diagnosis of CHF or patients who have been re-hospitalized due to CHF complications.
The program utilizes evidence-based best practices to teach patients to manage their disease process at home. The CHF program implements a team approach consisting of nurses, therapists, medical social workers, family and caregivers, and physicians. Patients are educated on the disease process and the importance of weight, diet, and exercise. Patients are also taught energy conservation techniques and educated on appropriate activity and rest patterns. Medication education and management are also a part of the CHF Program.
