Head and neck cancers are those that begin inside the mouth, throat, larynx, salivary glands, sinuses, and the muscles and nerves in these areas.
According to the National Cancer Institute, these cancers make up about 4% of all cancers in the United States. In 2021, 68,000 people were diagnosed with head and neck cancers.
Head and neck cancers are more common in people over age 50. People who use alcohol and tobacco are at the highest risk for this type of cancer. Other common causes include HPV infection, occupational exposure, and genetic disorders, among others.
