Once a year, it's a good idea to have a well-woman or annual exam where we go through a history and physical on the patient, talk about what screenings may need to be updated, what screenings may be upcoming, any health issues they're concerned with, review family planning or contraception, and other facets of their general health. The goal is an opportunity to be preventive. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and this is a great opportunity in medicine for us to sit down with the patient, make sure her health is being evaluated, that somebody's looking at her blood pressure, that she doesn't have any underlying concerns or things that do actually need to be addressed and dealt with, as well as keep up with screenings that are able, over time, to have a massive impact upon people.
The really nice thing about the annual exam is it is a check-in. These patients, over my 20 years of practice, have seen me multiple times for having children, doing other things, and it gives me a social opportunity to check in on them, see how things are progressing in their life, how their children are growing, and how things are going.
