Jennifer Cote, APRN:

A stroke is loss of blood or loss of oxygen to the brain through a particular artery or a clot from the heart. The brain is very sensitive to oxygen. With any loss of oxygen, you're going to have cell death. Time is always the biggest factor. The sooner you get to the emergency room, the sooner we can treat you. We have a medication that can help break up a clot. We can also, endoscopically, go in and pull the clot out.

When a patient comes into the Stroke Clinic after they've been discharged and they've had a significant stroke, the initial assessment is our first step together. Their journey is my journey. I'm there to help them and support them so that they have the fullest potential that they could possibly have.

The end goal is to find your new normal as a stroke patient, what your needs are, what it looks like where you're living, how things have changed, and what medications you are taking. We want you to be comfortable in your new world. We're there to support you, to help you, to educate you so that you don't have a second stroke. That's what people need, they need confidence in themselves to learn and to grow after a stroke.
