Sanjiv Mehta, MD:
Knee replacement has been around since 1962, and there have been constant iterations of improvement as we go along. We have gone along with better instruments, better implants, better anesthesia for pain control, and better modalities of physical therapy. In the operating room, our improvements have been using robotic assistance for intraoperative planning and execution of the knee replacement surgery.
The robot is simply an assistive device, helping to get a more accurate outcome. This particular technology allows us to minimize our incision size. It allows us to balance the soft tissue, such as the ligaments, so that the knee is not too tight and feels more like a natural knee. It also allows us to make accurate bony cuts, lining up the knee joint in the middle of where the hip joint is and the ankle joint. It allows us to get the alignment of the artificial knee as close to the patient's native knee as possible.
What I have noticed is the post-operative benefit to the patient. They are able to accomplish their range of motion a little bit earlier. What this means is that they're able to get back on their feet and, essentially, get back to their lives and activities of daily living in a little bit quicker fashion.
