J. Kenneth Ford, MD, Cardiology:
A lot of patients have different types of slow heart rates and we have different types of pacemakers to put in to fix the problem, increasing the heart rate back to normal. It has a computer in it and it monitors the heart rate. When the heart doesn’t beat at the right time, then it will generate an impulse to get the heart beating.
Kimberly Sparks, patient:
My heart rate had dropped to 22 beats per minute, and I had no idea. I couldn’t feel that. It just was caught on the monitor.
Dr. Ford:
Kim is a patient who had episodes of complete heart block that were causing symptoms, and we were able to put the AV synchronous version of this device in and avoid some of the risk of a regular pacemaker. The pacemaker technology has improved greatly over the last several years. They are much smaller and have more complex features. This newer device is implanted through the femoral vein in the groin directly into the heart, so you avoid the problems of infection. Baptist Health Paducah is the only hospital that offers this device at present, and it’s just another example of their commitment to allowing patients to get access to this care locally.
Sparks:
I was just thankful that I had to opportunity to have the pacemaker placed locally. My own doctor was doing it, so I was thankful that the technology was close by and available.
