Jeannine Perrenoud, DO:

A hernia is basically a defect in the abdominal wall that allows intestine or organs to protrude through. Hernias can be caused either by a weakening in the abdominal wall. You could be born with a hernia defect, or you could get the hernia defect by straining, and it could develop over time and continue to get worse as you continue to strain.

The only way to repair a hernia is surgically. There's different types of hernia repairs depending on the patient and the hernia defect itself. We now have minimally invasive type of procedures where we make smaller incisions, and we actually insert a camera, and we repair the hernia from the inside out. We repair the hernia most of the time with mesh, and if it's small and there's no bowel incarcerated in or anything like that, it can be very straightforward. And we do it every day, but there will be some soreness, and we won't let you do any heavy lifting for two to six weeks after the surgery. Just depending on the size of the hernia and what we did to fix it. After two weeks, they usually feel pretty good. There will be some soreness. The incisions usually are almost completely healed without any issues. Patients are usually eating well moving their bowels well. They're usually back to normal.

Baptist Health La Grange is a wonderful hospital. You will be treated like a friend, like family. The people who work here live in the community, and they do take a lot of pride in the care that we give to the patients. You are not going to get better care anywhere.
