Sometimes when you have obstructions in the coronary arteries, you need to improve the blood flow
to the coronaries.
And one way is with an operation.
Coronary Artery Bypass Graft or CABG, it's an operation to improve the blood flow to the heart. Patients with multiple vessel coronary artery disease are candidates for open heart surgery and CABG. Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts, with that, it's an open heart procedure, and we need to do an incision in the middle of the chest. In the breast bone is like five to seven inches incision, and with that, we access to the heart and the coronary arteries are in the surface of the heart.
So, we take veins from the legs, usually with a minimally-invasive procedure, and we construct the grafts with a very thin suture over the coronaries.
At Baptist Health Louisville, we are one of the few programs in the country that has 3-stars ratings in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, STS. So, we have very good results to offer our patients in our community.
