Brian Price, MD, Interventional Cardiology:
Interventional cardiologists treat a wide spectrum of arterial disease, both in the coronary arteries, as well as in a number of peripheral arteries throughout the body. We use catheters to travel inside arteries to reach our targets, and use angioplasty balloons, stents, and that type of equipment to fix blockages.
It’s really advanced a lot in the last 10 to 15 years, both in terms of intervention on arteries and veins, as well as in structural aspects of cardiology, intervening in valves, things of that nature. The technology continues to improve all the time, and I think it’ll continue to do so over the next few years. It’s become much more minimally invasive. When I started, we did almost all our procedures through the femoral artery in the groin. Whereas now, I do almost everything through the radial artery in the wrist, which is great. Patients can usually go home within a few hours, even if they received a stent or multiple stents.
I think it’s a great resource for patients here. I know I’ve encountered a lot of folks who in the past had to go to Louisville or Lexington for their treatment. We can do pretty much anything here these days. It’s great to have care close to home, and maybe even be home the same day.
