We here at Baptist Health Corbin offer a wide range of obstetric and gynecologic services. We offer prenatal care through birth for low-risk and high-risk pregnancies. The prenatal classes, I feel — and I advise all my patients to go to — it just makes you more comfortable with the pregnancy, what’s happening with the changes in your body. You know, the labor and delivery process is something like you’ve never experienced before, and getting a little education about what’s going to happen puts people at ease. We can definitely tell a difference between when a patient comes in and has taken the classes versus not. LDR is a room where we labor a patient, we deliver them, and we recover them all in the same room. It’s a nice continuity, whereas in the old days we used to have a separate room for each of those. We do all of them in the same room now. One of the good things about that is we get to keep mom, baby, and the family all together. And, one of the things we’ve been doing for the last few years is kangaroo care, where the baby is put right on the mom’s chest right after the delivery, and it’s a good bonding experience. Actually, it’s very physiological in that it keeps the baby warm, and babies just do better when they’re close to their mom.
