Pramod Reddy, MD, Cardiology:
Heart failure is one of the most common causes for admission to the hospital in the United States, including our location here. A common cause for heart failure is ischemic heart disease, which is coronary artery disease. A patient has blockages and has a heart attack. Other causes would be what you call a nonischemic cause, which would be due to hypertension, diabetes, valvular disease, arrhythmias of the heart, and infiltrative disorders, like amyloidosis and sarcoidosis. These are the common causes for heart failure.
These are some of the things you can do when you have heart failure. Your physician is going to be placing you on some medications, so you take those medications as prescribed, in a timely manner. Follow the instructions by the physician with regard to diet. It is very important, because salt in the diet is as important as anything else that could lead you to heart failure. Try to quit smoking, if you are a smoker. Try to make sure you control your blood pressure, because uncontrolled blood pressure can make heart failure worse. Control your blood sugar, because uncontrolled diabetes can make it worse.
Those are some of the things that would help to lead a healthy lifestyle, even though you have heart failure. When treating heart failure patients and having this clinic, the goal is to improve their quality of life, improve their longevity, overall make them feel better and be more productive, and in general, improve their well-being.
