David McConda, MD:
Orthopedic spine surgery involves the care and management of all types of diseases and injuries to the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. That’s the entire spine involving the neck and low back.
A patient should seek a specialist if the treatments they’re trying that may be provided or prescribed by their primary care provider or physical therapist don’t seem to be working.
Most of the time, the first steps are medications, which are oftentimes what you would see over the counter, things like ibuprofen and Aleve. Then, most often I get patients into something like physical therapy. That can often help most conditions.
Usually, at about six weeks to two months, if those things aren’t working, we get advanced imaging and look at things like an MRI and certainly X-rays, to see if there’s any anatomical abnormality that could be causing this. If there is, then we have options from that point that aren’t surgical, like injections, different types of specific therapies to help with a specific problem that we see on imaging, and then, we move to surgery as a last resort.
Oftentimes, I can find something that may have been missed or neglected over time that can be looked at and oftentimes can make their lives a little bit better.
