Keep Healthy by Keeping Track of Your Medical Records

Medical records are the goldmine of personal health. Every doctor’s office visit, test result, vitals reading, drug prescription, and hospital stay provides you with the information you need to manage your healthcare on an ongoing basis. This is why a growing number of people are collecting their medical information and developing a personal health record for themselves and their loved ones.

What Medical Information Should I Keep Track of?

Nearly every interaction we have with the healthcare system produces a record of some sort. Some of these are highly technical and limited to medical providers but many are now available to consumers through digital applications, known as patient portals. Additionally, you have the option of recording data from self-administered tests, such as blood-pressure readings and diabetic finger-sticks. There are a great variety of sources containing valuable medical information and recommended preventive-care schedules:

  • Personal health history, including medical history, ongoing conditions, and current courses of treatment
  • Family health history, including recurrent medical conditions with possible genetic factors
  • Doctor’s office records
  • Test results, including X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, urinalysis, bloodwork, bone-density scans, and allergen sensitivities
  • Vaccination schedules for yourself and your loved ones
  • Wellness and preventive screenings, including physicals, bloodwork, endoscopies, colonoscopies, prostate exams, pap smears, and mammograms
  • Hospital discharge notes
  • Prescription drug records
  • Health insurance forms and information
  • Medical power of attorney and other legal documents.

Yes, it takes some effort to stay on top of all your medical records. But isn’t your health worth it? Remember that good information today can help you block a bad illness tomorrow.
