James Criss Yelton, MD, Orthopedic Surgery:
Rotator cuff problems are some of the most common problems I see in my practice, especially in people past the age of 50 or so. It can be a degenerative process, but it’s also fairly common in younger patients, especially people involved in athletics. Typically, it’s diagnosed pretty easily by history or talking with the patient and also doing a physical exam. Usually, that’s supplemented by plain X-rays in the office, and usually you can make the diagnosis with that.
If somebody is having a lot of problems with the shoulder, especially if it is limiting them on a regular basis, there are some simple treatments that can really be helpful. Those can range from minor things like exercise and anti-inflammatory medications. Oftentimes, injections can be helpful as well. People who have this kind of problem typically can be helped quite a bit with some simple treatment in the office. So, there’s no reason to be concerned about it being a real burdensome treatment when you come to the office.

Orthopedics is a field that appeals to me because, for a lot of conditions, we can take the patient and make them better and allow them to do the things they want to. That’s one of the things that interests me about the work is that I feel like I’m a benefit to my patients. I make people better, and that gives me satisfaction.
